Sidewalk Repair & Replacement Program

The City of Walker’s Sidewalk Program, managed by the Department of Public Works, ensures that sidewalks are safe, accessible, and well-maintained throughout our community. As part of this initiative:

  • City staff regularly inspect sidewalks to identify areas in need of repair or replacement.
  • Damaged sidewalks are evaluated to determine whether they should be patched, replaced, or scheduled for full reconstruction.
  • The program supports pedestrian safety and neighborhood walkability, partnering with residents to maintain the quality and appearance of local sidewalks.

What costs can residents expect?

Residents are not charged for repairs or replacements that are scheduled through the City of Walker’s Sidewalk Program. The improvements are funded through the Public Works Department’s annual budget—there is no special assessment or direct billing to homeowners for sidewalk repairs done as part of this municipal program.

If you opt to repair a sidewalk yourself, the City will inspect to ensure it meets City specifications, and you may need to follow permitting requirements. Contact our department to discuss permitting requirements by phone or email.

Need to report a broken or uneven sidewalk?

Residents are encouraged to report any sidewalk damage—such as cracks, uneven sections, or trip hazards—in front of their homes. Simply call our office at (616) 791-6854, and our team will:

  1. Log your report and schedule an inspection.
  2. Evaluate the condition—looking for cracks, trip hazards, uneven heights, or other damage.
  3. Determine the most appropriate fix, whether it’s a spot repair, full panel replacement, or scheduling it for a future maintenance cycle.
  4. Notify homeowners of any necessary actions or timelines, especially if the repair involves a collaboration between the City and property owner.

Timely reporting helps us plan efficiently and ensure sidewalk issues are addressed as soon as weather and scheduling allow. Thank you for partnering with us to keep our community walkable and well-kept!
