We are pleased to announce Mike Burde as our new 1st Ward City Commissioner! Get to know more about Commissioner Burde below:
My name is Mike Burde, and I am honored to serve as the City of Walker’s First Ward Commissioner. I have lived in the Walker community for many years and have deep roots in West Michigan. Walker is a city I care deeply about: its people, neighborhoods, public safety services, parks, and growing economic opportunities make it a special place to live and raise a family.
I have spent more than 25 years in public service and educational leadership, most recently serving as a school superintendent and currently as the Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning for Wyoming Public Schools. Over the course of my career, I have led organizations, managed complex budgets, worked closely with elected boards, and collaborated with community partners to solve real-world problems. These experiences have shaped my belief in thoughtful governance, transparency, and long-term planning.
I hold a doctorate in leadership and have dedicated my career to developing people, building strong systems, and making decisions grounded in data, fiscal responsibility, and community values. I have also served in numerous leadership roles at the local and state level, working with diverse stakeholders to improve outcomes and strengthen organizations.
My wife and I are proud parents, and our family values service, stewardship, and community involvement. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors, staying active, and being engaged in the community.
As a City Commissioner, I am committed to listening to residents, supporting City staff, and helping Walker continue to be a safe, financially sound, and forward-thinking community. I look forward to the important work ahead and to serving the residents of the First Ward with integrity and care.
I can be reached by email at mburde@walker.city.
Commissioner Burde is taking over the seat of former Commissioner Thom Burke, who stepped down after moving out of the area.
