As we head into warmer weather, efforts will begin again to combat the destructive Spongy Moth. Between mid-May and early June, portions of Walker will be sprayed with the biological insecticide BTK Foray 76B, by aircraft. The exact date and time of spraying depends on weather conditions, the insect stage, and leaf development.
The intent of the spray program is to give heavily infested areas some relief from the caterpillar nuisance and to protect other areas from outbreaks when feasible. Foray 76B is a biological insecticide that only affects the caterpillars of moths and butterflies that are actively feeding at the time of treatment. The spray is applied in the morning in a very fine mist for maximum coverage of leaves. Most of the time the spray cannot be seen or felt. Rain has little effect on the spray if it has had time to dry. There is no cost for this application.
