Commissioner Melanie Grooters

Commissioner Grooters Headshot 2021

My name is Melanie Grooters and I am happy to be serving as a 3
rd Ward Walker City Commissioner. I, along with Elaina Huizenga-Chase, represent the 3rd Ward, which primarily covers the southern portion of Walker. Since 1990, I have lived on Riverbend SW, west of Wilson SW, which is a great location with a rural feel but centrally located to just about everything! As a Commissioner, I am particularly concerned
that Walker retain its reputation as a great and safe place to live, work and play.

I retired in May 2019 from the Kent County Administration office, where I worked for 11-plus years. My
exposure to government gives me a unique understanding of competing interests and the collaboration
needed to get things done. Collaborative efforts can be challenging and take time but ultimately benefit
everyone involved.

After raising my boys and caring for aging parents, I got a late start with my education and career. After
my parents passed away, I was able to attend Grand Valley State University, where I received my
bachelor’s degree in Public Administration with a minor in City and Regional Planning. While working for
Kent County, I completed my master’s degree in Public Administration. I am happy to now have the
time to focus on community involvement through my role as Commissioner.

In 1983, my husband and I were married, and we have two married sons and two grandsons, all who live
in the area. Family is important to us and we spend time with them all on a regular basis. I attend Mars
Hill Bible Church. I am on the advisory council for Area Agency on Aging of West Michigan and am
involved with the Grandville Walker Foundation.

As a City Commissioner, I have been appointed to the following committees:
• Historical Commission
• Traffic Committee
• Ordinance Committee
• Finance Committee (Alternate)
I am also Walker’s Liaison to the Kent District Library
I enjoy learning and being involved with this capacity and helping to support the great work being done
in Walker.

My personal interests include spending time with family and friends, craft beer, travel, reading,
perennial gardening, and quilting.

Grace and peace,
Melanie Grooters
3 rd Ward Walker Commissioner
