My name is Melanie Grooters and I am thrilled to be serving as a 3rd Ward Walker City Commissioner. I, along with Sandra Howland, represent the 3rd Ward, which primarily covers the southern portion of Walker. Since 1990, I have lived at 4688 Riverbend SW, west of Wilson SW (27 years and counting). It’s a great location, with a rural feel but a central proximity to just about everything! As a Commissioner, I am particularly concerned that Walker retain its reputation as a great and safe place to live, work and play.
I am employed for the County of Kent, in the Administrator’s office, where I have worked since 2007. My exposure to government gives me a unique understanding of competing interests and the collaboration needed to get things done. Collaborative efforts can be challenging and take time but ultimately benefit everyone involved.
After raising my boys and caring for aging parents, I got a late start with my education and career. After my parents passed away, I was able to attend Grand Valley State University, where I received my Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration with a minor in City and Regional Planning. While working for Kent County, I completed my Master’s degree in Public Administration. I am happy to now have the time to focus on community involvement through my role as Commissioner.
In 1983, my husband and I were married, and we have two married sons and one grandson, all who live in the area. Family is important to us and we are able to spend time with them all on a regular basis. I attend Mars Hill Bible Church and over the years have served in various capacities in church, in my kids’ schools and on the board for a Christian youth camp.As a City Commissioner, I have been appointed to the following committees:
- Historical Committee
- Personnel Committee
- Building Committee (Alternate)
- Finance Committee (Alternate)
Grace and peace,
3rd Ward Walker Commissioner
